FAQs

Why join a Speakers Club?

Many people find they have to do some sort of public speaking in their lives, such as -

Business presentations

Interviews

Wedding speeches

Public meetings

At our club you get the chance to practice what you say before the event.

Constructive feedback is given to help you improve and build your confidence.

What happens at a meeting?

A typical meeting involves people delivering prepared speeches for a particular purpose, or as part of a structured education programme.

Every speech is evaluated by another member in the club. Evaluation is constructive feedback pointing out which parts of the speech worked well and which areas need improvement.

There is also the chance to have a go at impromptu speaking.

As well as speaking everyone gets a chance to practise other skills – for example being the chair person for the evening.

Club meetings are friendly with an emphasis on personal development, having fun and learning something new.

What is the education programme?

The Speakers Guide is a manual designed to develop your speaking skills. There are various assignments focused on different aspects of public speaking, for example there is one on speech construction. The Foundation Certificate of Achievement is awarded on finishing the assignments related to the fundamental aspects of speech making. There are further assignments designed for the developmental aspects of speech making. On successfully completing these you will be awarded the ASC Certificate of Achievement. There are also various opportunities for continuing your education.

What type of people join your club?

Most of our members are professional people, aged 30-50. We have a balance of experienced long-standing members and new faces. We welcome people from any background to join, aged 16 and above.

When and where do you meet?

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month (except July & August) at Rectory Cottages, Bletchley. For location details see the Find us page. Meetings start at 8.00 pm and finish around 9.30.

How much does it cost?

Membership is £40 a year, payable at the start of the year.

Can I just come along and watch?

Yes – new guests are always welcome and you do not have to join the club. We ask that guests pay £5 to attend a meeting, but this will be taken off your membership fee if you decide to join.

Isn't it scary speaking in public?

It can be if you are not prepared. The practice, experience and confidence building you get at the club will help you to overcome your fears and feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience.
